I’m a little slow/late on posting this, and I can’t really think of a proper excuse.
So about the actually episode, Yep start of a new arc. Pretty back to basics… So there’s more tricking other merchants and Horo being Horo. Quite boring in comparison to the last episode but what the hey. But at least the shepard lady in the ED is revealed.
Also, about episode 7, you’ll need to buy the dvd to see it, or wait for some subbers to do it. Either way, you’ll have to wait some time.
For more details, a summary, pictures and thoughts…
that face is classic.
Summary:
It starts with some textless scenes with wolves and a shepherd… Oooo~ (ghost sound)
Meanwhile, Horo and Lawrence are in pub, and they are being warned by drunks about a magician controlling wolves to attack people on the new road. Some convo about Lawrence’s weakness to women… While walking back to the hotel, they have a conversation about where they would be heading next, the big city of Rubinheigen. Horo asks about apples, which Lawrence says they would be preserved seeing as it is winter, preserved in barrels of honey that is. Horo drools to the thought of apples, pears and peaches in honey. They decide to hurry to Rubinheigen.
And so the next day, they quickly go sell pepper to the town’s merchant. It takes quite a while, a lot of talking, they get a bad offer, but Lawrence goes ahead with it. Horo gets a drink but pretends to be sickly, after dropping her drink on the table, they notice that the cup’s contents run across the table. Meaning the table was slanted. The merchant was trying to screw them over, so Lawrence now blackmails him and gets himself some free plates of armour as well as a good deal for the pepper. They laugh about it afterwards.
Back at the hotel, Horo is drunk again and asking for some oil to groom her tail. Lawrence brings up all the commodities that Horo already owes him. But Horo is drunk… Anyway Lawrence gets pissed, and Horo has another “I’m so lonely” episodes and Lawrence gives in again. To which Horo jumps up and says she’ll pay back with interest too.
The dawn of the new day, they are travelling to Rubinheigen. Lawrence explains why he got the armour instead of selling more spices in Rubinheigen, something about tariffs. Also gold trading is brought up, and unless you had gold with the Church’s engraving you had to pay a high tariff. And if you were caught smuggling gold? Off with the arm!
They meet up with another bunch of travellers, they say how a certain road to Rubinheigen is filled with mercenary (bandits). And so they take the other path, which is the one rumoured to have the magician who controls the wolves. They get into an argument about humans being weak and defenseless in their sleep, and Lawrence brings up how Horo snores in hers.
Just then, Horo starts getting bad vibes, and assumes a more human form, aka hiding ears and tail. Up ahead they meet a shepherd who Horo says is the magician. Turns out she’s an attractive young girl and Lawrence is stunned. Horo is looking a little agitated (jealous?)
Thoughts:
I don’t know why, but the summary turned out particularly long. Maybe it’s me procastinating from other duties. Anyway…
As I said earlier, not an amazing episode (though it got better the more I rewatched it [which was about 4.5 times]). Seems like some parts they cut corners in the animation and it didn’t look too good. Also they had a lot of scenery shots. Guess they saving the budget for later episodes.
As for the new character shepherd person, I don’t know what will happen, as in not the slightest clue. She seems nice enough and didn’t kill Lawrence straight away so I don’t think she will be a baddie… I mean look at her in the ED, she’s all innocent like.
Also on another note, it seems heaps of people have dropped Spice and Wolf because it was boring. But i don’t think so! D=
Just to say I’ll watch it to the end!
Note: I took about 112 screenshots for this episode, and used like 28. I either need to post more screenshots or take less…
Next episode is Episode 9 “Wolf and Shepherd’s Lambs”.

Man, I really love this series! I don’t remember how I got turned on to it, but I’m really enjoying it. It doesn’t seem all that slow to me — things are just a little more subtle than the usual bang-zoom action, and I like that change of pace. It reminds me a little of Kino no Tabi or the like.
Besides, how can you resist Horo? She’s awesome. And amusing. X)
…On the other hand, Chloe seemed nice at first, too. Maybe a little impudent, but not the sort to go skewering Lawrence with sharp pointy bits of metal (or ordering goons to do it for her)… kee hee hee. We shall see what becomes of Little Shepherd Girl in due time, I suppose~
according to some pictures i’ve seen the shepard stays with them for a while, like new party member style
